Tennessee Agate Pictures
Buffalo Mountain Find Page 2

Buffalo Mountain is one of the last foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Tennessee Blue Flame Agate
Tennessee Blue Flame Agate

This is one of the first pieces found at the site and one can see what a surprise contained
within. This really boosted expectations for future finds and this site honestly has not let
us down. Orange lightning bolt inclusions reminiscent of flames all contained within
this bluish pearly agate. This nodule is non-fractured and these pictures are of
1/2" thick slices approximately 6" x 3".

Tennessee Agate Red Moss
Tennessee Agate Red Moss

This agate resembles some of the moss agates I've seen from other localities, but really
doesn't display as much of the 'moss' seen in more popular varieties. This piece is very
clear with a blue hue that really sets off the red. This is a 1/2"x5"x3" slice.

Tennessee Agate Red Moss - Another Slice off the Same Rock
Tennessee Agate Red Moss

This 1/2" slice off the same rock displays much more of the 'moss-like' qualities
associated with moss agates. The white fuzzy looking patches are not camera
blur, they are a small needle-like inclusion that appears to be slightly porous.

Tennessee Agate - Classic Red and Orange
Tennessee Agate - Classic Red and Orange

Red and Orange Agate is the mainstay at this locality. Here we see blue chalcedony
lines and some patches. This is without fracture and cuts into very thin slices for cabbing.
The blue chalcedony makes for a striking combination of color and well suited
for cabbing.

Tennessee Agate - 'Chunky' Red and Orange
Tennessee Agate - 'Chunky' Red and Orange

This nodule is much smaller than any in the line up so far - 2"x2". However, it displays some
interesting charecteristics. It contains 'chunky' areas of light colored chalcedony that give
the appearance of some of the jaspers found along side. The orange agate borders on the
edge of translucency as do the lighter colored 'chunks'. The red part appears to have a
grain that resembles tree rings and is also without fracture. Below is the other half.

Tennessee Agate - Clear
Tennessee Agate - Clear

This nodule doesn't contain much color, but the level of transparency is unusual
for most of what we've uncovered. This piece contains some fractures. This is a large
nodule 12"x8".

Tennessee Agate with Blue Chalcedony
Tennessee Agate with Blue Chalcedony

This is a strange piece in the way that all the colors seem randomly swirled
together. The blue chalcedony mixed with the white lends itself to some nice
cabochons as the majority of this agate contains no fractures.
This nodule measures about 6"x6".

Tennessee Agate - Lace and Swirls
Tennessee Agate - Lace and Swirls

Many pieces similar to this agate nodule have been uncovered here. The pattern reminds
me of storm clouds gathering in the distance. The orange chalcedony around the edges
is almost translucent with no fractures. Below is the other half of this 7"x 6" nodule.
There are definate areas of lace agate within this piece.

Tennessee Agate
I love this piece and there are many similar pieces as well - always exciting to uncover
another. Rarely is any color seen on the exterior of these nodules. It is a mystery until
revealed. This Tennessee agate nodule is approximately 6"x 3.5"x 3" and the picture
speaks for itself. There is no shortage of color in this piece and there is brown jasper
intertwined throughout the nodule which really makes for a nice presentation. As far as
East Tennessee agate is concerned, to my knowledge, this agate coloration
is unique to this locality.

Tennessee Agate - Orange Chalcedony
Tennessee Agate - Orange Chalcedony

As far as agate from this locality goes, this piece is probably representative of most of
what has been gathered. In my own opinion, it should get honorable mention for its
lackluster qualities that somehow produce a piece worth looking at. It isn't truly
ugly and yet it isn't truly attractive either. Again in this piece, the orange chalcedony
is leaning toward transparency and no fractures within this agate.

Tennessee Agate - Blue/Gray Chalcedony
Tennessee Agate - Blue/Gray Chalcedony

Blue-Gray agate with a high level of transparency is very common at this find.
The above and below piece are slices from the same 8"x5"nodule. There is a fracture
here and there, but for the most part it cabs nicely and the brown inclusions
truly look attractive when cabbed.

Tennessee Agate - Black Onyx
Tennessee Agate - Black Onyx

These black onyx nodules are exactly as found - minus the dirt. White, orange and
varied shades of black give these nodules some real personality. The black is as clear
as any I've seen anywhere. I've yet to work with any, but all are fracture free.

Tennessee Agate - Orange 'Flame-Like' Inclusions
Tennessee Agate - Orange 'Flame-Like' Inclusions

This is an 8" nodule of a smokey color with bright orange 'flame-like' inclusions. The
smokey color also has white spider webbing throughout - really neat looking.

This picture is an attempt to show the two large crystals lining the crevasse. The crystals
are exactly like the nodule - smokey and orange. There are more smaller crystals
that aren't able to be seen from this angle.
